Leicester Boy Donates To Fire Department, Gets Tractor

LEICESTER (CBS) -- Six-year-old Nick Soldi has dreamed of owning an electric toy tractor. Now he has one thanks to his own spirit of giving and a complete stranger.

It started with the Leicester Fire Department Halloween costume contest.  Nick's grandmother dressed him up as a table of food, and he won the $103 grand prize.

He promptly gave $50 back to the fire department.

"I was stunned," said Firefighter Jonathan Plante. "I got a bunch of cash donated by a little kid, when not many adults would do it."

When Millbury mechanic Paul Rosenlund heard about the little boy's donation, Paul couldn't help but be impressed. Then he found out Nick had dreamed of the electric, ride-on tractor but his family couldn't afford one.

So Paul bought the $300 tractor for the boy he'd never met.

"He's such a giving kid, and he was really excited," said Rosenlund. "But it backfired on me, because it made me feel better than ever."

And after donating $50 to the Leicester Fire Department, 6-year-old Nick still has $53 left, right? Wrong.  Nick now wants to buy $40 worth of mittens for kids who can't afford them.
