Fact Checking Governor Candidate’s Ads

By Karen Anderson, WBZ-TV

BOSTON (CBS) — Charlie Baker claims the Governor wants to raise your taxes.

He says it on TV, on Twitter, and in person. He even had a sign at his campaign event that said the Governor wants to raise taxes.

When we take a look at the facts: that’s a misleading claim.

Governor Patrick has not released a plan to deal with the predicted $2 billion budget gap. He says he will do so in December after the final budget numbers are confirmed.

The Governor has said throughout the campaign: he has no plans to raise taxes in the second term.

GIVING CASH CARDS FOR BOOZE AND SLOTS = MISLEADING AD

Charlie Baker’s new ad claims the Governor is giving welfare recipients cash cards for booze and slots.

When we take a look at the facts: that’s another misleading claim.

The Governor is pushing to pass a bill to stop abuses of the cards, but he says Republicans are blocking it from coming to a vote for political reasons.

It won’t matter because he won’t be governor anymore, but what do you think Patrick will do to deal with the $2 Billion budget gap…..? Um, raise taxes as he has 8 other times.

And, perhaps the most ridiculous statement I have ever read “Republicans are blocking it from coming to a vote…” When did the governor “push to pass a bill”? Today? Where are the misleading ads from the other candidates? No wonder why I don’t watch WBZ.

Is this article a joke, a bag job for Patrick or both?

  3. Jack says:

I love it! People complaining about the facts.

  4. Nick says:

And what is it you think Chuckie Baker would do (if elected– Lord save us!) to deal with the budget shortfall? Hmmm… maybe come up with another magical financial plan like the one he invented for Big Dig financing?

  5. jaygee says:

If you are talking about politicians in Massachusetts then the answer is quite easy. None of them tell the truth. They simply decide to spend millions of dollars for a job that pays $140,000 per year. That, in and of itself, explains everything.

  6. Tall Guy says:

Patrick said he wouldn’t raise taxes before he was elected Governor but he raised taxes 8 times in his first term! If Patrick’s bill to stop Welfare recipients from cashing in on booze hasn’t been passed then technically Bakers claim is true. The argument of Baker being responsible for the outrageous Big Dig price tag is ridiculous! Democrats and Republicans are equally responsible for raping the public with the Big Dig project.

This is crazy. THis is a reason why I have been stop reading and watching Channel 4. This is showing a pure spin to what Channel 4 leans politically.

Baker is right and Deval will not get back in!

  8. Debbie says:

this story is so one sided. no fact checking Patrick’s ads? Why do you think Patrick won’t release any information until after the election? umm.. because he wants to have an “adult conversation” about taxes later this year. His plan IS to raise taxes. poor reporting.

I guess this article tries to make up for the half-hour debate rebuttal that Jon allowed Charlie Baker to have Sunday morning. It’s a feeble attempt at best. If the Republican Governors weren’t such liars, this article wouldn’t be necessary.

  10. jmr2 says:

Tall Guy, most of your statements are false. Perhaps you should get a job with the Republican Governors. Or don’t real facts matter to you.
