NYC youth coach indicted in MA sex abuse case
An influential former New York City youth basketball coach has been accused in an indictment of sexually assaulting a male player during a team trip to Massachusetts in the 1970s.
Northwestern Assistant District Attorney Jane Mulqueen said Ernest Lorch was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on charges of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over and attempted rape.
Mulqueen said Lorch allegedly abused the player, then 17, during a trip to a tournament at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst sometime between March 1977 and April 1978.
She said Lorch has been summoned to appear for arraignment, though a date hasn't been set.
Lorch founded the Riverside Church basketball program in Manhattan, whose alumni include numerous NBA players.
A call for comment to Lorch's attorney Wednesday was not immediately returned.
