Britney Gengel (WBZ-TV)
The family of a college student from Massachusetts who died in the Haiti earthquake hopes to build an orphanage on the island in her honor.
Nineteen-year-old Britney Gengel of Rutland was on a humanitarian mission with fellow students from Lynn University in Florida when the massive quake struck in January.
Len Gengel was planning to be in Haiti on Friday in the hopes of purchasing land for the orphanage in Grand Goave, about one hour from Port-au-Prince. He envisions an earthquake-proof building in the shape of a ‘B’ for Britney.
The family formed a non-profit foundation, Be Like Brit, to raise money for the project.
