Arpaio to speak in NH on immigration

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is speaking at a Republican fundraiser in Nashua, N.H., on his efforts to give local authorities power to enforce immigration laws.

Arpaio is known for pushing the bounds for how local law enforcement agencies can confront illegal immigration. He's speaking Sunday. He has said he plans to house illegal immigrants convicted under Arizona's new immigration law in tents in the desert. About 1,300 U.S. citizens and illegal immigrants are serving time in Arpaio's tents for convictions for theft, domestic violence, drunken driving, identity theft, human smuggling and other crimes.

The sheriff's office has housed inmates in canvas tents during Phoenix's triple-digit summer heat since August 1993.
