Lowell police officer killed by alleged drunk driver

An off-duty Lowell police officer was killed after being struck on his motorcycle by an alleged drunk driver.

Police say 31-year-old Patrick Johnson was hit at a Lowell intersection at about 12:20 a.m. on Saturday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Theary Chan of Lowell was arrested at the scene and faces charges including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence and failure to stop at a stop sign.

The 26-year-old Chan is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Lowell District Court.

Johnson had been a Lowell police officer since 2004.  He was married with two young children.
