Out-of-staters boost enrollment at U of M

University of Maine officials say this year's freshman class is 2 percent bigger than last year, due largely to a a 7 percent increase in out-of-state enrollment.

Students began arriving at the Orono campus Friday for the school's traditional "Maine Hello," when volunteers greet the new students and their families and help them move in. Classes begin Monday.

The class of 2014 now numbers 1,837 students - 1,454 from Maine and 383 from out-of-state.

That's up from the 1,803 students who entered Maine's flagship university last fall, but is down from the 2,094 in the fall of 2008.
