Woman attacked in the North End

WBZ-TV

It's an area that's already under police scrutiny, but there is still a problem with thugs in the North End.

The latest incident was on Saturday, when a 28-year old woman was attacked right outside her door on Salem Street.

Police say the woman was arriving home with a friend around 3:30 a.m. but stood outside the apartment to smoke.

A man approached asking to use her lighter, she talked to him for a  moment then turned to go back inside, that's when the man grabbed her and tried to strangle her.

The victim bit and kicked the man and he ran off.

The woman sustained some cuts and brusies but is otherwise okay.

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man in his 20's who is about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build.

Police don't believe this latest assault is related to previous attacks in the North End, which stretch back a couple of years.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at (617) 343-4248. You can also call the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1(800) 494-TIPS or text the word 'TIP' to CRIME (27463).
