Patrick says Obama won't attend Vineyard fundraiser

Gov. Deval Patrick says he has not invited President Barack Obama to his fundraiser because he wants the president to enjoy his vacation.

Top White House aide Valerie Jarrett is hosting the fundraiser for Patrick Saturday night on Martha's Vineyard, where the president is vacationing. Patrick says he has not asked Obama to attend.

Patrick says he doesn't expect a surprise appearance from Obama because it is hard for a president to do anything by surprise. But the guests have been vetted by the Secret Service.

Patrick and Obama share Chicago roots, Harvard Law degrees and the distinction of being the first blacks to hold their offices.

Patrick is running for a second term against a Republican, an independent and a Green-Rainbow candidate.
