Chelsea police cruiser strikes, kills pedestrian

Investigators say a Chelsea police cruiser's emergency lights and sirens were on when it struck and killed a pedestrian.

Authorities said 56-year-old David Burgess of Chelsea was apparently trying to cross Broadway on foot at about 11:15 Thursday night when he was hit by the police car.   He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Police said the officer was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life threatening.  The officer's name has not been released.  He has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.

The Suffolk District Attorney's office says the cruiser was responding with "active lights and sirens" to a call to assist police from neighboring Everett with a foot pursuit.
