A man has reportedly shot himself on the roof of a building in downtown Lowell after police cornered him following a failed robbery attempt.

The Lowell Sun reports the man tried unsuccessfully to rob Lowell Cooperative Bank on Saturday afternoon, then led police on a chase through downtown to the building, before shooting himself.

The man was airlifted to a Boston hospital.

No further details were available. Lowell police said they would not release information about the incident until later Saturday.
