Obama, GOP bicker over small business bill

President Barack Obama is again hitting at Republicans for standing in the way of progress.

Senate Republicans earlier this week blocked a proposal to create a $30 billion government fund to help open up lending for credit-starved small businesses.

Obama accused the GOP of "holding America's small businesses hostage to politics." He says the bill has the support of business groups and contains provisions favored by both parties.

Obama says it's not just a policy disagreement, but a reason for voters to steer away from Republicans in November's pivotal, mid-term congressional elections.

Under the rule, nearly 40 million businesses must file tax forms for every vendor that sells them more than $600 in goods.

The goal is to prevent vendors from underreporting their income to the Internal Revenue Service.

In the Republican weekly radio and Internet address, Sen. Mike Johanns says it's just one example of how President Barack Obama's promise to support small businesses "really rings hollow."
