$12,000 water bill?

CBS

The Brockton Water Department is up to its neck in troubles.   The city council has ordered an audit after it was learned the water department had under-charged residents for decades due to faulty water meters.

The department says roughly 9,000 of the city's 25,000 meters are not accurately reporting usage. Retroactive bills have been sent out which have alarmed and confused some customers.

Bob Ford couldn't believe it when he opened his recent water bill which showed he owed nearly 12-thousand dollars. He and other residents are fighting their retroactive bills, saying it's not their fault they underpaid.

City Councilor Jass Stewart says the council has voted to audit the department and they're now investing in new equipment.

The water commission has voted to lower the rates for undercharged residents and give them 3 years to pay the bills.
