Stow woman charged with stealing from Boy Scouts

A former Stow selectwoman has been charged with stealing $20,000 from the Boy Scouts and an additional $7,000 from another youth group.

Carole Makary was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty at her arraignment Thursday to larceny from a voluntary organization and making false entries in corporate books.

Prosecutors say while serving as volunteer treasurer, the 56-year-old Makary wrote numerous $1,000 checks from the local Boy Scout troop's bank accounts and deposited them in her personal account. She replaced some, but not all the money.

She also allegedly tried to dispose of financial records.

She's also accused of stealing $7,000 from Friends of Stow Destination Imagination.

There was no answer at a listing for Carole Makary.
