Authorities on Martha’s Vineyard are trying to determine what caused a massive fire that destroyed a U.S. Coast Guard boathouse, pier and several private boats Monday afternoon.

Petty Officer 3rd Class James Rhodes says there were no reports of injuries in the blaze at the Coast Guard station at Menemsha Harbor in Chilmark.

Rhodes says the blaze began at about 2:42 p.m. and quickly engulfed the boathouse and pier as well as a truck and trailer for the 25-foot boat that was in Woods Hole at the time of the fire.

The station’s 47-foot boat evacuated the pier just before it became engulfed in flames.

Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says the blaze appears to have began in a Coast Guard boathouse, but there was no immediate word on cause or damage estimate.
