Round 2 Mock Draft – Joe The Intern

Round 2  Mock Draft by Joe Gartland aka Joe the Intern

After a crazy round one, and a few reaches here and there (cough Jaguars, Broncos, Patriots, cough) there is a lot of talent left for round two. Only thing we can expect based on round one is the unexpected, look for a lot of moving up and down again and the targets should be QB's Clausen/McCoy. How Clausen falls will dictate this round in a big way. The way the draft stands now this is how I see it playing out and why…

33. St Louis Rams – DT Lamarr Houston, Texas

Rams lacking punch up front, and just traded DL Adam Carriker. Houston can be instant starter

34. Minnesota Vikings – CB Chris Cook, Virginia

Cook is a bit of a reach here, and while Clausen could be an option if they didn't take him at 30 I just don't see them taking him today. Need CB depth.

35. Tampa  Bay Buccaneers – WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois

Very strong WR, put up the most bench press rep's for a WR at the combine. Serious need for a playmaker in Tampa, Benn is a great value here.

36. Kansas City Chiefs – OT Roger Saffold, Indiana

After passing on a OT in round 1, I can't see them passing on one again – even with Clausen on the board still.

37. Philadelphia Eagles – S Taylor Mays, USC

Still have a huge need for a safety, Mays has consistency issues but is a physical presence with tremendous potential if coached right.

38. Cleveland Browns – QB Colt Mccoy, Texas

McCoy is a perfect fit for the Browns and their West Coast offense. Didn't have to reach for Clausen who it would seem Holmgren is not high on. Can let McCoy learn for a year or two and be the QB of the future.

39. Oakland Raiders – OT Bruce Campbell, Maryland

Such an Al Davis pick. Workout monster, quickest OL in the draft. Looks great in the gym, has work to do on the field. Worth the risk though he could be special if he comes together. A project.

40. Miami Dolphins – OLB/DE Sergio Kindle, Texas

Kindle fell big time due to late breaking reports about his knee injury. Could require microfracture surgery but in the 2nd round with his talent? Can't miss for the Dolphins system. Fills right in as a replacement for Jason Taylor as OLB/DE hybrid with a non-stop motor.

41. Buffalo Bills – OT Charles Brown, USC

I just don't see the Bills taking Clausen. They have looked long and hard at mid-round QB's and have a big need for an OT. If Brown is still on the board I can't see them passing on him he has 1st round talent at a big position of need.

42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DE Everson Griffen, USC

Very inconsistent but talented, after the Gaines Adams trade last year Griffen fits a need, and with him and McCoy on the DL in that 4-3 scheme they can put a lot of pressure on the QB with just their linemen.

43. Baltimore Ravens – NT Terrance Cody, Alabama

The massive Cody projects well as a Wilfork-type NT who stuff up the middle but also break into the backfield on pass plays. It's not a big need but I can't see the Ravens and their 3-4 defense passing on a solid NT, can't find those too often.

44. New England Patriots – WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame

This pick really makes up for the Pats passing on Dez Bryant. It might not seem like it to outsiders but WR is a huge position of need for them. Moss is pretty much gone after this year and he's said it, Welker is a beast but coming off a huge injury and is a slot guy (same with Edelman), and who knows about Brandon Tate. Golden Tate can line up outside, in the slot, versatile guy played in Weis' pro-style offense. Great selection here.

45. Denver Broncos – LB Brandon Spikes, Florida

The Broncos still need an ILB and Spikes has 1st round talent, he fell because of a 5+ 40 time at the Combine. McDaniels knows better than to judge his picks off of the combine.

46. New York Giants – LB Sean Lee, Penn St.

It will either be Lee or Spikes here depending on how the round shakes down. With Antonio Pierce gone they need a QB of their defense and the versatile Lee can be that guy.

47. New England Patriots – DL Linval Joseph East Carolina

Joseph played DT in college in a 4-3 scheme and projects as a DE in a 3-4 defense. Mike Wright is nice, but probably not the long term solution. This will help them fill the hole left after the Seymour deal.

48. Carolina Panthers – QB Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame

Panthers need a QB. I just don't see Matt Moore as the answer and Clausen would be an A+ pick for them at this point. Let him sit behind Moore for a year (as we know Carolina has him penciled in as their starter right now) and then let Clausen loose. Would really put this team back on track and give them a dangerous offense again with best 1-2 punch at RB in football and Steve Smith at WR.

49. San Francisco 49ers – OLB Koa Misi, Utah

Manny Lawson just isn't getting it done in San Fran and has lacked the aggression and physical play Mike Singletary loves. Misi is a big physical LB fits their mold and can make a big impact right away.

50. Kansas City Chiefs – OL Vladimir Duccasse, UMass

Even with the Saffold pick, they can really shore up the big OL problems they had last year with the massive G/T Duccasse. Vlad is probably a guard and they can start to put the pieces together to protect the QB they gave a lot of money to in Matt Cassel.

51. Houston Texans – RB Montario Hardesty, Tennessee

A few RB's on the board, I think Hardesty fits what Tennessee is looking for. Physical, quick, RB an play on 1st and 2nd down and then let Steve Slaton be the 3rd down.

52. Pittsburgh Steelers – WR Eric Decker, Minnesota

After the Holmes trade they need a 3rd WR. Decker has some injury issues and just had screws removed from his foot following his surgery but is a good value, and is a very physical, tough player fits the Steelers mold, could benefit big time learning from a similar player in Hines Ward.

53. New England Patriots – TE Rob Gronkowski, Arizona

I like this pick for the Pats. Seriously need a TE with only the aging Crumpler on the roster, and if Gronkowski didn't get hurt last year he would have been a 1st round talent.

54. Cincinnati Bengals – DT Brian Price, UCLA

Price could have gone anywhere from 31 to Indy to here, Bengals D was much improved last year and after

55. Philadelphia Eagles – G Jon Asamoah, Illinois

Asamoah is one of the top G's in the draft and gives them help up the middle of that OL, they'll need that protection with young Kevin Kolb at QB.

56. Green Bay Packers – RB Toby Gerhart, Stanford

Ryan Grant might not be the Pro Bowl RB they thought he was and have no depth behind him.

57. Baltimore Ravens – WR Damian Williams, USC

Ravens are eager to add weapons to 3rd year QB Joe Flacco's stable. They become very legit with Williams, Boldin, Stallworth, etc.

58. Arizona Cardinals – TE Ed Dickson, Oregon

Dickson might have been college footballs best TE with Gresham injured last year. Need weapons with Boldin gone and have never had an elite TE, Dickson could really stretch the field for them in a spot of need.

59. Dallas Cowboys – S Morgan Burnett, Georgia Tech

Cowboys still need a S, passed on Mays for Bryant, and Burnett or South Florida S Nate Allen will fill a big need.

60. Seattle Seahawks – RB Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss

Love this for Seattle. Hawks didn't get Spiller in round 1 but add a great versatile back in McCluster who Pete Carroll will know how to utilize best after coaching Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight the last few years.

61. New York Jets – DE Greg Hardy, Ole Miss

Hardy might be a reach here but they need youth on the OL and can develop Hardy into a great pass rusher in Rex Ryan's scheme.

62. Minnesota Vikings – RB Joe McKnight, USC

Adrian Peterson needs a RB behind him to change the pace of the game a bit. They lost Chester Taylor and McKnight can be the 3rd down guy and be a weapon in the passing game as well.

63. Indianapolis Colts – DT Cam Thomas, North Carolina

Cam Thomas is a force up the middle. I could see him going earlier in round 2 here but if he falls to the Colts it's a no-brainer gives them a force up the middle after adding Hughes for the edge.

64. New Orleans Saints- OLB Eric Norwood, South Carolina

Norwood is a sleeper pick. Saints lost Fujita to free agency and Norwood is a bit undersized but is a serious athlete and I think very underrated by most analysts.
