No Punishment for Pittsburgh's Cooke

Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Matt Cooke will not be suspended for his hit to the head of Bruins center Marc Savard on Sunday. NHL head disciplinarian Colin Campbell made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at the NHL GM meetings in Florida. After the hit, Savard was taken away on a stretcher and has been diagnosed with a grade 2 concussion. Campbell said in an interview on Monday that he did not believe that Cooke's elbow made contact with Savard's head.

The announcement that there would be no punishment came only hours after NHL GMs unanimously proposed a new rule that calls for mandatory punishment for hits to the head.
